As a department of music within a general arts college of a large university, students can benefit from the richness of a broad based curriculum while undergoing a deep musical training. The most important characteristic of our department's education is its focus on the individuality of each student and warm relationships between students and teaching faculty. We aim to produce first class performers and musicians. We emphasize practical training courses in vocal, piano, string, wind and percussion as well as composition and theory. Our department is a leader in the recently expanding creative field of music informatics, offering courses in electronic music and the computer-based scientific analysis of sound. We also offer innovative courses in music education, including music therapy. Students are able to participate in classes offered by the other departments, so they can acquire a comprehensive art education.
